Social media usage statistics
We’ll kick things off by looking at some general social media user figures that tell us how many people use social media globally.
How many social media users are there?
As of April this year, there are around 5.07 billion social media users in total—more than half the world’s population. Or at least that’s the best estimate that the data boffins have been able to come up with.
Keep in mind, though, that this doesn’t necessarily represent the number of unique individuals who use social media, but rather the number of social media identities/accounts there are. It may be that the numbers are somewhat inflated due to issues like duplicate and bot accounts.

What percentage of the population uses social media?
At the time of writing, the global population stands at a little over 8.1 billion. So, some quick math tells us that around 62.6% of the total global population uses social media—that’s pretty crazy.
What’s more, the global population with access to the internet is much lower at just 5.44 billion. That means that an even more impressive 93% of the online world uses social media.

Interestingly, this stat also tells us that social media platforms may be even more popular than search engines. Only 81.8% of people in the same study were found to have visited a search engine in the last month, which is around 13% less than social networks.
