25+ Threads Statistics For 2025 (Users And Growth)

Looking for the latest Threads user statistics? You’re in the right place.

Threads is the social network to watch this year. Following a turbulent first year, its growth has now picked up substantially, and it’s slowly catching up to rival platform X.

In this post, I’ll be sharing all the most important facts and figures you need to know about Threads this year.

Threads user statistics

Let’s start with the essentials. Here are some Threads user statistics that tell us how many people currently use the platform.

1. Threads has over 275 million monthly active users

In the earnings call for Meta’s most recent quarterly report, they announced that Thread now has over 275 million users worldwide. And head of Instagram Adam Mosseri later confirmed this in a post on Threads.

2. Over a million new people sign up for Threads every day

According to another recent post from Adam Mosseri, Threads has been averaging around a million new sign-ups each day for the last three months.

As we’ll see in later statistics, that figure is significantly higher than earlier this year and last year, which suggests that Threads’ is now beginning to gain some serious momentum.

In addition to the growth in Threads usage, Meta also reported that they’re seeing strong growth in engagement on Threads.

3. 23.9% of active Thread users open the app every day

According to data reported by Datareportal, around 23.9% of Threads’ active user base use the platform daily.

That’s still significantly less than rival network Twitter/X (41.2%). However, it’s worth keeping in mind that these figures are from earlier this year. We know that engagement has reportedly picked up over the last month or two, so Threads could now be closing that gap.

4. The average Threads session duration is 1 minute 41 seconds

That’s how long the average user spends on the app each time they open it, according to data reported on Datareportal. Again, that figure is behind Twitter/X, which has an average session duration of 2 minutes 26 seconds.5

Threads growth over time

Next, let’s look at some statistics that reveal the change in Threads user numbers, downloads, and sign-ups over time.

5. Threads gained over 100 million users within its first five days…

Threads was launched in 100 countries on Wednesday 5 July, 2023. By Thursday morning, 30 million people had already signed up. And by Monday, it had already crossed the 100 million milestone.

You can see a complete breakdown of its week-1 growth in the table below.

6. …making it the fastest-growing online platform of all time

OpenAI’s ChatGPT previously held the record for the fastest-growing online platform, having reached 100 million users in two months.

Threads smashed past that record, achieving the same number of users in just 5 days—12x quicker than ChatGPT.

7. Threads’ user figures dropped 82% by the end of its first month…

While Threads set records in its first week, it couldn’t sustain that incredible early growth rate. It soon became clear Threads had an issue with user retention, and growth began to slow.

Two days after launching, Threads reportedly had 44 million daily active users. But by the end of its first month, there were just 8 million Threads daily active users.

While significant, this decline wasn’t necessarily unexpected. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he was anticipating the fall off and predicted that the user numbers would stabilize eventually.

8. …and the average time spent on the app plummeted

The average time spent on Threads per session was around 19 minutes at its peak. That fell to 2.6 minutes by the end of its first month. Likewise, Threads’ daily open count peaked at around 14 per day, but that dropped to 3 opens per day by the end of the month.

As with the initial drop in daily user figures, this drop in engagement was also expected after the initial hype surrounding Threads’ launch died down.

9. Threads has been growing steadily since those early days…

Threads growth slowed down dramatically after its first week. It reached 100 million in its first 5 days, but would only add 30 million over the next 3 months.

However, in the latter half of 2024, Threads’ growth rate began to increase again. Between the second and third quarters of the year, monthly active users grew by 50 million, then again by 75 million by the fourth quarter.

The table below shows a complete breakdown of Threads’ quarterly growth since its release.

Quarterly periodNumber of active Threads users (quarter-over-quarter growth)
Q3 2023100 million
Q4 2023130 million (+30 million)
Q1 2024150 million (+20 million)
Q2 2024150 million (+0)
Q3 2024200 million (+50 million)
Q4 2024275 million (+75 million)

10. …and is now growing x4 faster than last year

It took Threads 9 months to go from 100 million MAUs to 175 million MAUs. At that time, its growth rate was around 8.3 million additional users per month.

Then more recently, Threads added 100 million more active users in the three months leading up to November. That works out to around 33.3 million additional users per month.

As such, Threads has essentially quadrupled its average growth rate in recent months.

It seems likely that this increase in growth was caused by several factors, including growth in key markets like Taiwan, and the US election, which served as a catalyst for liberal users to leave Elon Musk’s X and join Instagram Threads instead.

Final thoughts

That concludes our roundup of Threads user statistics.

As these stats show, Threads seems to have finally solved the user retention issue that plagued them in their early days and is now picking up steam.

If it can maintain its current growth rate, we may see Threads become a more serious competitor to X and other social media platforms. Mark Zuckerberg certainly seems to think so, having said he’s confident in Meta’s ability to grow the platform and even talked about reaching a billion users.
