Let’s start by looking at some TikTok statistics that tell us how popular the short-form video app is around the world…
1. There are over 1.5 billion TikTok users
The number of TikTok users worldwide currently stands at 1,562 million. That’s around 18% of the global population or 27.5% of the worldwide adult population. That penetration rate is even higher if we look solely at global internet users.

Interestingly though, TikTok was the most downloaded app in the three years prior to this. Its fall to second place might be a sign that its momentum is beginning to wane

5. …And the second most downloaded app in the United States

10. Over 80% of TikTok users say they use it to ‘look for funny or entertaining content’
This is by far the most common activity amongst TikTok users.
In comparison, only 44.9% said they use TikTok to ‘follow or research brands’, only 39% said to ‘keep up to date with news and current events’, only 17.9% to ‘message family and friends’, and only 39.4% to ‘post or share photos & videos’.

Time spent on TikTok

11. The average user spends 34 hours a month on TikTok
People spend more time on TikTok than any other social media app with an average monthly usage time of 34 hours.
Next in the rankings is YouTube with an average monthly usage time of 28 hours 05 minutes, and Facebook ranks a distant third at 19 hours 47 minutes.
Those are the worldwide averages, by the way. In the USA specifically, the average monthly TikTok usage time is even higher at 45 hours and 37 minutes.

13. The average TikTok user opens the app around 344 times a month
343.7 to be exact. This makes TikTok the third top social media app by average number of monthly app sessions, below WhatsApp (929.9), Line (366.4), and Instagram (347.8)

14. The average TikTok user opens the app on around 62% of the days in the month

TikTok user demographics
Next, let’s look at a handful of statistics that tell us what TikTok’s top user demographics are.
16. 52% of TikTok users are male
TikTok has a relatively even gender split amongst its advertising audience, with 52% male users and 48% female.
Source: We Are Social
17. Over 36% of Tiktok users are under age 24
18.1% of TikTok users are females aged 18-24, and 18.6% are males aged 18-24, for a total of 36.7% of users in the 18-24 bracket.
This makes under 24 the largest TikTok user demographic by age.
A further 32.6% of TikTok users are male or females aged 25-34. Those two stats taken together tell us that over two-thirds of TikTok users are under 34 years old.
Source: We Are Social
18. Younger users like TikTok significantly more than older users
14.7% of females aged 18-24 said TikTok is their favorite social media platform in a recent survey, compared to 9.4% of those aged 25-34, 6.8% of those aged 35-44, 5.5% of those aged 45-54, and just 4.3% of those aged 55-64.
This suggests that enjoyment of TikTok negatively correlates with age: As age increases, the likelihood that a user will say TikTok is their favorite platform decreases.
Interestingly, that’s the opposite of the trend we find with other platforms like Facebook & WhatsApp, both of which positively correlate with age.
